日本人が聞き取りづらいポイント
- …kill ourselves.：ourselves の ‘l’ と ‘v’ の音が重なり、かつ語尾が弱くなるため「アワセルブズ」とはっきり聞こえず「アワセゥブズ」のように聞こえます。
- bought them to…：bought の ‘t’ が飲み込まれ、them の ‘th’ も弱くなるため「ボゥテム」のように聞こえることがあります。
- break one manju in half：in half の部分は「イン・ハーフ」と分けず「インナァーフ」とつながって（リンキング）発音されます。
文法ポイント（5つ）

anything bad（何か悪いこと）のように、-thing で終わる単語は後ろから形容詞が修飾します。TOEICでも something new など頻出の形です。 - I bought them to kill rats.
不定詞（to ＋ 動詞の原形）の副詞的用法で、「〜するために」という目的を表しています。 - Jiro kicks the ball a little too hard…
「too ＋ 形容詞/副詞」で「あまりに〜すぎる」という意味になります。ネガティブなニュアンスが含まれることが多いです。 - There’s no poison in the manju.
There is no 〜（〜が全くない）という強い否定。昨日のストーリーにも出てきた重要表現です。 - …until there aren’t any left.
until（〜までずっと）という継続を表す接続詞。any left で「残っているもの」という意味になります。
文化小話：落語の「附子（ぶす）」
このお話は、日本の伝統芸能「落語」や「狂言」で非常に有名な『附子（ぶす）』が元になっています。附子とはトリカブトの毒のこと。本来は主人が高価な砂糖を独り占めしたくて嘘をつくお話ですが、この Simple English 版では「まんじゅう」にアレンジされていて、より親しみやすくなっていますね。
