Summary（EN）：Sadakichi works for a rich shop owner. One weekend, the owner is cooking beans to make miso and asks Sadakichi to check on them. In the kitchen, the beans smell great. Sadakichi wants to know if they are soft enough, so he decides to taste a few “just to check.” But the beans are so good that he keeps eating more and more. He knows he shouldn’t, yet he can’t stop, and he starts to worry about being caught.

Summary（EN）：At the same time, the shop owner also worries about being seen. He thinks it will be a problem if Sadakichi finds him eating the beans, so he decides to hide and eat them too. Surprisingly, he chooses the same place: the toilet. The beans taste wonderful, but the toilet smells terrible, which makes the scene funny. Soon, Sadakichi returns to the toilet—only to find his boss inside. Both of them are shocked, and Sadakichi quickly tries to explain himself. After that, Sadakichi goes back to the kitchen and “acts” like he is only checking the beans. The owner believes him and even gives him a task. In the end, the owner smells the beans again and starts eating them as well, realizing why Sadakichi couldn’t stop.

日本人が聞き取りづらいポイント
- What if my boss sees me?：What if の後が省略っぽく聞こえて、疑問文というより“焦りの独り言”に聞こえやすいです。
- No one will see me there.：will が弱く短く発音されやすく、全体が一気に流れて聞こえがちです。
- in the room upstairs：room と upstairs がつながって聞こえやすく、upstairs だけ拾えないことがあります。
文法ポイント（5つ）
- Maybe I should eat some to check.
★should は「〜したほうがいい（提案・判断）」の形。ここでは“確認するには食べたほうがいい”という自分への言い聞かせです。Maybe がつくので「たぶんね」という弱めの言い方になります。 - He starts to eat them, but then he thinks …
★start to + 動詞 は「〜し始める」。start eating もOKだけど、ここは to が使われています。but then で「でもそのあと（急に）」と流れが切り替わる合図です。 - What if my boss sees me?
★What if …? は「もし〜だったらどうする？」の定番。未来の不安を一気に出せる便利フレーズで、会話でもよく使います。 - It will be a problem if Sadakichi sees me.
